Curriculum Overview

The classroom instruction is based on the expectations identified in the Florida Standards. For a brief overview of what the Florida Standards is all about, please visit http://www.fldoe.org/academics/standards/parent-resources.stml.

Sparr's faculty and staff are proud to deliver a quality education designed to meet the needs of all students and ensure our students become self-sufficient, responsible citizens. By using the resources available at Sparr, students will be able to continue to grow academically, as demonstrated by data.

Language Arts: For Reading, we use the Savvas series, which is aligned with the Florida BEST standards. Students learn phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension skills through whole group, small group and individual instruction. Three times a year, students take a state progress monitoring assessment. These assessments give us information about the strengths and weaknesses of each child and allow us to meet each child's particular needs. At the end of each quarter, 3-5 grade students take a DPMA (District Progress Monitoring Assessment). This helps teachers to guide their instruction and determine which skills have been mastered and which skills need to be retaught. For Writing, we use the Top Score Writing program to teach writing skills. We use the WriteScore diagnostic program to determine strengths and weaknesses in each child's writing skills.

Please be sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes a night. Independent reading is great practice and is critical. It builds fluency and improves reading performance. Students can read through MyOn. Students can access MyOn through their student desktop portal and read a book based on their interests.

Math: We use the Savvas textbooks, which are aligned to the BEST standards, for math instruction. This helps teachers to guide their instruction and determine which skills have been mastered and which skills need to be retaught.
